Artists' Projects

The evolving world of contemporary art finds many artists utilizing the skills and expertise of others to realize their respective visions. Whether Stephen Reynolds is commissioned to execute these works in traditional venues or in unconventional spaces, he is prized by artists, curators, and gallery staff members for his vast technical knowledge and precision production techniques. His experience and understanding of an artist’s intent are crucial to the realization of an art work.

My commissions include painting works of art for major museums, individual artists, and cultural institutions. I paint words and images on museum facades, gallery walls, concrete floors, glass windows, and sidewalks in accordance with artists’ specifications.

I paint on-location indoors and out, producing a wide range of site-specific artist’s installations, and work with a variety of materials including latex, One-Shot sign painting enamel, ceramic paint, alkyd, concrete paint, gold leaf, and graphite.

When producing works of art on-site, I paint letters on walls that vary widely in surface texture. Glass and steel are fairly smooth, but concrete, brick, and stucco can be challenging to paint on. I value the highest level of craftsmanship when painting on all surfaces, especially rugged or porous ones.

I often rely on traditional transfer methods when painting on walls such as using a pounce pattern, made by perforating hand-drawn letters or images on paper, then transferring the image by dusting the pattern with chalk. I also draw directly on walls, plotting points of reference, then connecting them, using a level and snap line.

When commissioned to paint words or images for an artist as a part of a painting, sculpture, or installation piece, I bring my experience and technical skills to the project, working closely with the artist to insure my work is correct and consistent with the artist’s intent.
